About the author

I’m Assunta Crupi-Pogliano and I’ve spent the last 25 years teaching EAL and Languages, firstly in the secondary school setting and later in the adult education sector. I love teaching pre-beginner and beginner students and enjoy creating user-friendly learning materials, carefully scaffolded and sequenced to allow students to slowly develop their skills and confidence.

The materials in The Initial EAL Workbook (2ed) have been developed over several years and trialled with my students. It is from my students that I learnt to create materials best suited to emergent readers. Watching my students work through the materials and gain a sense of achievement as they consolidated their learning, inspired me to create a workbook filled with ready-to-use worksheets for other teachers of pre-beginner and beginner students.

The Initial EAL Workbook (2nd Edition)

The Initial EAL Workbook (2nd edition) provides essential material for anyone teaching Course in Initial EAL. This course is part of the EAL Framework, a Victorian government-funded curriculum for adult learners. While the resources are tailored to align with the performance criteria of each unit, anyone teaching a pre-beginner course for entry-level students with minimal to no formal education will be able to draw from the various topics.

The Initial EAL Workbook uses a visual, structured approach that works alongside immersion in the mainstream. Larger fonts, meaningful visuals, white space on the page and simple instructional language are necessary for building our students’ confidence and skills in a slow-paced sequential manner. Offering clear, practical support for teachers, this workbook contains a variety of interesting themes and topics, with a focus on skills development in listening, speaking, reading and writing. All the worksheets have been carefully curated in a series to contain the same vocabulary. Each series follows a similar pattern; matching, labelling as well as cutting and pasting activities for word recognition and comprehension. Over time, having students work on similar concepts presented in slightly different ways will lead to greater consolidation of learning.

Always remember, as a teacher, you have the very powerful gift of inspiring people, so from one teacher to another,

Happy teaching!
